Creating the Shabby Chic look in your home!
The Shabby Chic look is becoming
more popular throughout Australian homes. A shabby chic look refers to
furniture that has the appearance of aging with a vintage aesthetic. Commonly
the shabby chic look is made with distressed wood. Shabby chic is used to make
a vintage or timeless theme within your home; usually made from light tones
such as caramels, ivories, golds, blues, pinks and light greens. The shabby
chic look creates elegance with minimal effort.
The shabby chic style started in Britain
and reflects the old country with new contemporary styles. The look of old
country style homes have vintage faded furniture, aged paintings and old wooden
floors, not to mention the stunning materials of the Victoriana era and the
quirky tea pot sets of the mid 1900’s.
Below are some handy tips on how to
make your bedroom, living room or garden area have the shabby chic look.
Bedroom
Create a romantic vintage feel to your bedroom
using shabby chic furniture. Use light tones such as ivories and pastels, and
include hints of darker tones like toffee or champagne to offset. Use a
distressed look wooden bed frame such as this hand carved shabby chic bed (above.) Use ivory bedding with
darker toned accents. The next item you should consider is another larger
furniture piece like a dressing table or a seat such as this chic French style leather seat (left.) To add interest to a wall consider hanging a piece of
art or a mirror. Something like this white wooden hand carved mirror (right) would
work well. Lastly, add a few small decorative pieces such as a candle, photo
frames or ornaments to finish off the look.
Living room
A common place to use the shabby chic look is
in your living room. Chose darker tones; toffees, greens and blues with the
high distressed look such as this vintage coffee table (above.) The coffee table will be the main
focal point so ensure it has the shabby chic feel. Once you have picked an
appropriate coffee table think about other items that can be placed on top such
as some quirky magazines or ornaments such as these Brass bowls (left.) To
balance the look in a room, you will want to add at least one other furniture
piece such as a tv cabinet, seats or a bookshelf like this eccentric Blue open bookshelf (right.)
Garden
The shabby chic look can also be created within
your garden or outdoor area by using light tones with distressed wooden pieces
such as this stunning Maharani daybed. Add some vintage style cushions
like the Blue hand embroidered mirrored cushions (left) to enhance the shabby chic look. Finish your shabby
chic garden look off with a marble water fountain and some quirky side
tables.
